A mellow beachbreak tucked along the Destin East stretch of Florida's Emerald Coast, The Back Porch sits beside its namesake fried-seafood restaurant off Old Scenic Hwy 98. SE, S, and SW swells push rideable peaks here from waist-high through double-overhead, with NW, N, and NE offshores cleaning things up nicely. Low-to-mid tide generally produces the best shape on a sand bottom that shifts seasonally. Fall through spring is the most consistent window, though hurricane swells can deliver the stand-out days. This is an all-levels break with a welcoming, mellow lineup and rarely more than a handful of surfers on any given day. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through spring, plus hurricane season. Consistency: moderate, Gulf-dependent. The road-check advantage here is real: you can scan peaks from your car along Old Hwy 98 before committing, saving energy for the days that actually deliver.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays and weekends alike, the lineup stays quiet. The local vibe is welcoming rather than territorial, and the broader Destin East stretch means surfers disperse across multiple peaks even on busier days. Dawn patrol is rarely necessary here for crowd reasons, but it never hurts.

Access & Facilities

Park at The Back Porch restaurant lot or along Old Scenic Hwy 98. June White Decker Public Beach Park is the formal access point, with public bathrooms and outdoor showers. Water is clean and the emerald color of the Gulf is genuine. The real hazard listed by locals: overeating at the adjacent June's Dunes restaurant before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

Destin East offers several beachbreak peaks in both directions along Old Hwy 98, all easily car-checked before you grab your board. Further west, Destin proper has additional beach access points. When the Gulf is completely flat, Panama City Beach to the east picks up slightly more swell exposure.
