A reliable beach break sandwiched between better-known Anastasia Park peaks and the Vilano stretch, St. Augustine Pier offers short, punchy rights and lefts off shifting sandbars on Florida's northeast coast. It picks up any swell in the water, working from knee-high to well overhead, and a W wind is all you need to clean it up. Tides don't matter much here. The wave is friendly to all skill levels on smaller days, though the community reports crowd warns it gets scrappy and competitive when surf is actually good, especially on weekends. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through spring with hurricane swells filling in summer. Consistency: high when anywhere in the region is breaking. Park the North side of the pier to dodge the swimmer traffic and keep your leash tight for stray fishing lines coming off the structure.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions are mellow with a low-key, welcoming vibe. Weekends shift the equation fast, especially when swell hits. Some locals describe the pier zone as requiring assertiveness when it gets busy. Beginners may be better off at nearby Vilano Beach or the Matanzas Inlet area, which offer more forgiving environments and less competitive lineups.

Access & Facilities

Park along A1A directly next to the break. Walk down the pier stairs and paddle out on the north side to stay clear of swimmers. Tropical restaurants and a gas station are close by for post-surf fuel. Water quality is generally clean though can turn murky after rain. Hazards include sharks common to the region and fishing lines from the pier structure.

Nearby Alternatives

When the pier is blown out or maxed, check Anastasia Beach Park's three peaks: The Entrance, Middles, and Blowhole. Vilano Beach sits just north and is notably more beginner-friendly with a calmer crowd.
