A wedgy, fast-breaking jetty wave north of Port Everglades Inlet, Spoils is one of South Florida's most infrequent but legitimately powerful setups. It needs a solid 3-5ft of swell to wake up, handles 6ft-plus on good days, and works best on mid to high tide when the current from the inlet isn't running so hard it makes paddling a workout. NE ground swell is the ticket, and offshore conditions are partly sheltered by the jetty itself from NE and SE winds, which is a rare advantage in this wind-exposed stretch of coast. Experienced surfers only: shallow rock bottom rolls audibly under the sets, boats cut through the lineup during lulls, and the inlet current can move you fast. This is a short-ride wave most sessions, but on a proper ground swell day it can wall up to 150-300m. Bottom: reef and rock near a breakwater/jetty structure. Season: winter months, NE ground swell. Consistency: very low, classic maybe a handful of times per decade. Come prepared for the current and bring a thruster with some paddle volume.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays and weekends both run quiet given how rarely it breaks well. When it does fire, the word gets out and the lineup fills up with experienced surfers who've been waiting years for the right day. Jet skis are a recurring hazard and a legitimate complaint from regular visitors to this spot.

Access & Facilities

Parking is extremely limited near the break and tow-zone restrictions apply at certain hours. Plan on a walk of 10-15 minutes from the nearest realistic parking. No dedicated facilities. Watch the inlet traffic: commercial vessels and recreational boats pass through regularly and do not yield to surfers.

Nearby Alternatives

Port Everglades Inlet itself and the sandbars along the Fort Lauderdale stretch activate on the same NE ground swells. If Spoils isn't breaking, check the beach peaks north toward Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, which offer more consistent if less powerful options on smaller swell.
