A jetty-influenced beach break in Miami Beach that punches above its Florida weight class, South Beach wedges N-NE swells into A-frame peaks on the north side of the jetty, with SE windchop wrapping around to spin off the best rights in the area. Westerly winds go dead offshore, and low-to-incoming tide sharpens the shape considerably, though size will push the break through to higher tides. Best from waist-high to 3ft overhead, it can be the only wave breaking statewide when a zero-degree north swell bypasses the rest of the coast. Crowds are heavy at any sniff of surf, this is Miami. Bottom: sand with jetty-influenced banks. Season: fall through spring. Consistency: medium. Water quality is surprisingly decent for such an urban setting, though proximity to downtown Miami's estuary and a rumored discharge pipe near Fisher Island means you should check conditions after heavy rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect a packed lineup at any sign of surf. Miami has a large, hungry surf community that waits a long time between good days, so when it fires, everyone shows up. Locals are generally welcoming but have earned their waves. Paddle out with respect, read the pecking order, and don't snake sets. Dawn patrol is your best chance at space.

Access & Facilities

Car park on site, lifeguard coverage, and easy beach access make this one of the more straightforward entries on the Florida coast. It sits within an oasis of parkland amid the Miami Beach hotel strip. Plenty of food, water, and facilities nearby.

Nearby Alternatives

When South Beach is too crowded or the swell angle is wrong, the stretch around 21st Street can produce longer lefts on N-NE swell at lower tides. Further south, good sandbars can form around other jetties and piers along this stretch, taking similar N/NE swell with varying tide windows.
