Florida's most celebrated beachbreak jetty wave delivers short, punchy barrels off the north side of the inlet on the Space Coast, roughly midway between Melbourne and Vero Beach. Optimal conditions call for an ENE to E groundswell at waist to double-overhead, low to mid incoming tide, and SW or W winds. The jetty at First Peak wedges and amplifies swell, adding size and hollow punch to even small days. Intermediate to advanced surfers are the target audience here, though be warned: this is arguably the most crowded surf spot in Florida, drawing weekend pilgrimages from Orlando, South Florida, and the Gulf Coast. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through spring, with hurricane swells the bonus round. Consistency: medium. Beach replenishment and jetty renovation work in recent years has significantly altered First Peak's famous wedge, with sand slowly returning, so manage expectations accordingly. Bring your shortest, most maneuverable board and get there at dawn on a weekday if you want elbow room.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is a destination spot and it shows. Weekends are ultra-crowded with talented surfers who know this wave inside out. Humility and respect in the lineup are not optional extras. Contests run regularly. If you're visiting, dawn patrol on a weekday is your best bet to find space. Aggressive fishermen on the jetty add a non-surf variable to the hazard list.

Access & Facilities

Sebastian Inlet State Recreation Area charges an $8 daily entry fee and provides a large car park, toilets, showers, a beach cafe, picnic area, boat ramp, and camping. Water is generally clean but outgoing tides after heavy rain can flush murky lagoon water into the lineup. Rocks near the jetty are a real hazard at certain tides, and the shark population is noted, drawn by heavy fish activity around the inlet.

Nearby Alternatives

When Sebastian is maxed out or too crowded, Third Peak and OK Signs offer a slightly more relaxed vibe on the same stretch. Further north, Chernobyles and Spanish House need more swell but produce quality left tubes on solid N/NE swells. Satellite Beach to the north has coquina reef sections worth checking on smaller, cleaner days.
