Sand Key's sandbar fires best in the wake of a cold front, producing a punchy right-hander off a shallow bar on the south side of the Clearwater Beach inlet. NW or W windswell in the 2-5ft range triggers the best sessions, with E winds cleaning things up after the front passes. Mid to high tide keeps the bar from draining out, though low tide can squeeze out hollow sections. This is the go-to post-frontal spot for northern Pinellas County, accessible to all ability levels, and it sees moderate crowds on the better days when everyone else has the same idea. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through spring, plus hurricane swell windows. Consistency: fickle, cold-front dependent, realistically working a few days per month in winter. Stingrays are present in the sandy shallows, so shuffle your feet on every entry and exit.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is welcoming and generally low-key, but expect company on the standout post-frontal days when the whole county knows it's firing. Locals have priority by custom. Patience and respect go a long way here. Spread out when you can because the bar is wide enough to share.

Access & Facilities

The break is inside a county park on Gulf Boulevard, with a large public parking area and a pavilion nearby. Facilities include restrooms and a designated surf zone. Water quality is generally clean, though red tide outbreaks occur occasionally and will shut things down fast. Check local advisories before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

Clearwater Beach to the north picks up similar NW windswell and can be worth a look when Sand Key is maxed or packed. Bellair Beach to the south offers a quieter stretch of the same sandbar-driven setup on smaller swells.
