Reef Road delivers the best wave in South Florida, a long muscular left that wraps around Palm Beach Inlet's South Jetty and walls down the sandbar for well over 100 yards when a solid NE swell is running. On bigger NNE-NE swells from chest-high to overhead-plus, lines bend around the jetty and form point-like lefts that are exceptionally fast rather than classically hollow, though the inside section can barrel hard on larger swells. Mid to incoming tide keeps the wave organized. WNW winds are ideal, and the coastline's slight SE orientation means N winds blow sideshore across the inlet without killing the lefts. This is an experienced surfer's wave: the crowd is heavy on weekends and the local vibe is genuinely intimidating. Bottom: sand over structured bar. Season: fall through spring, with hurricane swells delivering standout days. Consistency: moody but rewarding when it lines up. Park cautiously, respect the lineup order, and do not drop in.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekend crowds are heavy and the local vibe is described as intimidating. This is one of the most competitive lineups in Florida. Respect drop-in rules strictly, especially on the longer set waves. Dawn patrol on weekdays significantly reduces pressure. Broken boards are a known outcome when the wave is big and the lineup is fighting over sets.

Access & Facilities

Access is rated difficult. Parking is extremely limited and enforcement is active. The safest approach is to sort parking well before entering the water. Man-of-war and sea lice are regular hazards, check conditions before paddling. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When Reef Road is too small or maxed out, Flagpole just to the north picks up windswell better on smaller days and offers a more accessible peak. On hurricane swells, other Palm Beach County sandbars fire simultaneously, so it pays to check the full stretch of coast before committing to the Reef Road crowd.
