Flagpole at Palm Beach Public Beach punches above its weight as one of South Florida's most consistent surf spots, rivaling Lake Worth Pier for reliability along this stretch of the Atlantic coast. NE to NNE groundswell is the bread and butter, with shoulder-high north swells spiraling into decent left barrels off the inside reform. SE windswell occasionally spins up solid rights. Best at incoming to mid-tide, with WNW winds keeping faces clean. The wave can't hold much size, capping out around overhead before things get messy. Bottom: sand and reef. Season: fall through spring, with hurricane pulses adding the best energy. Consistency: high for the region. The sand shifts constantly, so different peaks fire on different swells. Check the main zone between the flagpole, the lifeguard tower, and the restaurant to find what's working on the day.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Heavy crowds are the norm here. Weekends, holidays, and any time school is out sees the lineup overrun with local grommets and college surfers from Palm Beach Atlantic. A contingent of older, established locals take their pick of the litter and won't hesitate to assert priority, particularly toward surfers traveling up from Dade and Broward. They know the spot cold and generally don't escalate, but provoking them is a bad call. Dawn patrol on weekdays is the practical answer.

Access & Facilities

The beach sits at the end of Royal Palm Way off Okeechobee Boulevard, reachable via A1A or the Okeechobee Bridge heading east. Metered parking is available but expensive and enforced aggressively. Free one-hour spots exist on side streets if you're patient. Lifeguards work the beach and most surf themselves. Be respectful if they redirect the lineup. Hazards are standard South Florida: sharks, jellyfish, and sea lice. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

Lake Worth Pier, a short drive south, offers a comparable consistency level and works a similar swell window when Palm Beach is blown out or maxed. Juno Beach Pier to the north picks up more swell on larger NE pulses and can be less crowded on weekdays.
