A fast, hollow reef break off the northwest coast of Puerto Rico, Middles delivers punchy, powerful waves that reward experienced surfers willing to navigate a competitive lineup. It needs a solid NW or N swell of 3-5ft to show its best, with offshore winds from the SE and low to mid tide shaping the cleanest faces. On good days the ride stretches well past 150m, with hollow sections that demand commitment and quick footwork. Weekdays see a manageable crew, but weekends bring crowds fast, and the under-20 local contingent rips hard and wins most paddle battles. Bottom: rocky reef. Season: fall through spring, peaking Nov-Feb. Consistency: moderate to good in swell season. Bring a board with enough volume to paddle through the peak, and be prepared for rail bumping as a normal part of this lineup's culture.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays the lineup is light. Weekends it packs out. The local crew is young, skilled, and assertive. Paddle battles and contact in the lineup are routine, not personal. Respect the pecking order, don't snake sets, and you'll get your share. Dawn patrol is the cleanest window on any day of the week.

Access & Facilities

Located along the northwest coast of Puerto Rico. Nearby towns have food, water, and basic supplies. The rocky bottom is the main hazard: reef shoes or booties are worth considering, especially at low tide. Watch for sea urchins on the inside section.

Nearby Alternatives

When Middles is flat or too crowded, the northwest coast has no shortage of options. Surfers Beach, Crash Boat, and Wilderness all pick up similar swells and offer different shapes and moods depending on size and wind. Bridges comes alive on bigger NW pulses and is worth checking on the same run.
