Jacksonvilles most consistent beach break, Mayport Poles sits just south of the St. Johns River inlet inside Hanna Park, where the Mayport Naval Base jetty bends a raging northeaster into clean, rideable lines. NE swell is the trigger, with W winds offshore, and low-to-mid tide exposing the deeper, more powerful sections. Size range runs 3-8ft-plus, and this spot holds when everything else on the northeast Florida coast is closing out. It suits all skill levels on smaller days, but the paddle-out on big NE windswells earns its medium shoulder-burn rating, and the beach regularly fills with surfers who never made it past the shorebreak. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through spring, plus hurricane season. Consistency: among the highest in north Florida. The left bowl off the south jetty is the main draw, fast and occasionally barreling deep enough to be makeable, so position yourself there when size is up.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekend crowds here are no joke, ultra-packed when a NE swell is peaking. Localism is manageable rather than heavy, partly because the crowd self-polices and partly because the wave takes care of itself on big days. Mind your positioning, paddle wide, and show respect to the rippers who call this home. Dawn patrol after a storm swell cleans up is your best shot at space.

Access & Facilities

Enter via Katherine Abbey Hanna Park off Mayport Road heading toward the Naval Base. There is a park entrance fee. Boardwalk leads straight to the break. Facilities include showers, parking lots, camping, bike trails, and canoe access. Water quality is fair given naval port traffic and heavy ship activity nearby. Do not paddle north past the break boundary onto Naval Base property.

Nearby Alternatives

When Mayport is maxed out or too crowded, Jacksonville Beach and 1st Street to the south pick up similar NE swell with less intensity. On smaller days, the beach breaks around Atlantic Beach offer more forgiving options for intermediate surfers looking to avoid the Poles crowd.
