A sand-bar inlet break south of St. Augustine that consistently punches above its weight, producing larger surf than the surrounding beach breaks and offering rides on both sides of the channel. Best on NE to E swell with a W wind offshore, working from thigh-high to double overhead across low to incoming tide. The middle of the inlet is the focal point of the best peaks, but that same zone carries a well-documented shark presence, so situational awareness is part of every session here. Longboarders and funboard riders get the most out of the long, gently breaking sections on the south side, while shortboarders can find punchy peaks when size builds. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through spring, with hurricane swell filling in summer. Consistency: above average for the region. Bring a longboard or fish for the smaller days, and do not paddle the shark-heavy middle section alone.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday and weekend crowds are consistently light. The local contingent is welcoming but expects respect in the lineup and correct parking on the south side hill. A few regulars know every face in the water, so introduce yourself and read the room. The shark factor keeps the headcount honest.

Access & Facilities

Park on the hill on the south side of the inlet. The water runs murky at times due to natural tannins from local rivers rather than pollution, and water quality is clean. No lifeguards. The historical Fort Matanzas National Monument is nearby. There are no surf rentals on site, so come prepared.

Nearby Alternatives

When the inlet is flat or the shark activity feels elevated, the beach breaks north toward St. Augustine pick up similar NE swell and offer more consistent beginner-friendly conditions. Crescent Beach to the south handles E swell and is worth checking on the same run.
