A legitimate shorebreak on Florida's Amelia Island, Main Beach fires when NE to SE cyclone swells punch through without getting diluted by the coquina reefs and sandbars that typically neuter Sunshine State surf. At high tide the bank steepens into hollow, fast lefts and rights that unload hard, giving intermediates a proper punchy beach break when conditions align. NE swells are the sweet spot for the reeling lefts, the break reads swells from N to S but won't hold much over a couple feet overhead before shutting down. Best winds are W. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through spring, with hurricane pulses. Consistency: fickle but rewarding when it fires. Note that bodyboarders have an established claim to this peak, so read the lineup and show respect before paddling straight into the mix.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are manageable, weekends draw visitors and it gets busy. The local vibe is generally welcoming, but the lineup has an established order: bodyboarders hold priority at Main, and surfers are directed toward the first point. Respect that dynamic. Localism is light overall, but ignoring the hierarchy will make your session worse.

Access & Facilities

Straightforward: park near the beach, paddle out. Shoulder burn is minimal with a clean duck-dive channel. Watch for sharks, occasional rays, and jellyfish. Water looks brown from sediment but tests clean. No complicated access, no cliff scrambles.

Nearby Alternatives

When Main Beach closes out or the crowd stacks up, first point offers a more structured wave for shortboarders. Other Amelia Island beachbreaks spread along the N-S exposure of the island and can pick up swell from a wide window when the sandbanks cooperate.
