Destin's go-to wave when a cold front rips through and the Gulf finally shows teeth. Jetty East is a sand-bottom beach break that wakes up in winter on SE to SW swells, with NW, N, or NE winds cleaning up the face. It works best from 6 to 8ft, occasionally pushing 10ft on big Gulf events, making it the heaviest wave in the immediate Destin area. Low-to-incoming tide is the call. Better-than-average to expert surfers claim this one on size, and crowds build fast when word gets out. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through spring, with hurricane swells the wild card. Consistency: low to moderate, but reliable when the conditions stack. Paddle out via the channel between the jetty and the main break peak, then drift east with the current after your ride and walk back up the beach.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is average for the Florida Panhandle. Moderate crowds on normal days, but this being the region's premier big-wave option, any significant swell draws a full lineup fast. Dawn patrol on the day after a front passes is the move. Respect the channel etiquette and give experienced surfers priority on the bigger sets.

Access & Facilities

Plan a 10-minute walk from the parking area. Parking attendants are present, so bring cash or have a payment option ready. Water quality is clean. The Emerald Coast's Gulf water runs clear and warm in summer, cold enough in winter for at least a 3/2 wetsuit. No immediate on-site facilities noted, so bring water and wax.

Nearby Alternatives

When Jetty East is too small or the banks are off, scan the broader Destin beachfront for sandbar peaks that can fire on smaller swells. Panama City Beach breaks, roughly an hour east, offer additional options during the same swell windows.
