Fast, powerful sandbar peaks break off Honeymoon Island's Gulf-facing shore, firing almost exclusively on hurricane-season swells that push enough energy into the normally calm Gulf of Mexico. Needs 6-8ft of swell to wake up and can hold 10ft-plus on the bigger storm pulses. Works best on NE to SE swell with offshore W to NW wind, and mid to low tide tends to sharpen the banks. An experienced-only wave when it's on: rip currents run hard, undertow is real, and the sandbar morphology shifts after every significant storm. Bottom: sand. Season: Jun-Nov hurricane swell. Consistency: low, event-driven. Paddle out with respect for the currents and have a clear exit plan before you go out. On busy hurricane days the state park entry fee keeps the crowd manageable, but weekends still get competitive when word gets out a swell is running.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays and shoulder-of-the-swell days are lightly surfed. Once a hurricane swell is confirmed, expect weekend crowds and word spreading fast on local channels. The state park entry fee acts as a natural filter. No heavy localism reported, but experienced surfers hold priority when conditions are serious.

Access & Facilities

Reach the island via the Causeway from Dunedin, off Bayshore Blvd. The state park charges an entry fee, which includes parking. Restrooms and picnic facilities on site. Water quality is generally good outside of storm runoff immediately post-hurricane. Watch for rip currents running along the bar, particularly on the bigger swells.

Nearby Alternatives

When Honeymoon Island is too small or the banks are blown out, Caladesi Island to the south occasionally picks up similar swell. Further south, Clearwater Beach jetties can offer a wind swell option when tropical fetch is angled right.
