A dead reef running along Hillsboro Beach produces the only true reefbreak in this stretch of South Florida, generating lefts that are noticeably more hollow than the beachbreaks on either side. The reef catches NNE and SE swells best, and the wave works from low to incoming tide when the shape tightens up. Ideal wind is WNW, offshore enough to groom the faces. Head-high and above is when the reef shows its character, though smaller days still draw a crowd. This is an all-levels spot in theory, but the reef and the lineup pressure demand awareness. Bottom: sand and reef. Season: fall through spring. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Watch the rocks on paddle-out and during wipeouts, especially at low tide when the reef is exposed.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This lineup draws heavy crowds given it is the only reefbreak in the immediate area. Everyone within driving distance knows what the reef means when swell hits. Localism is described as frantic rather than hostile, but the pecking order is real. Dawn patrol midweek is the practical answer if you want room to surf.

Access & Facilities

Parking is limited, which compounds the crowd problem on good days. Arrive early. The water quality is surprisingly clean for a densely populated stretch of South Florida coast. Rocks are the main hazard, particularly at lower tides. Booties are worth considering if you are prone to wipeouts in shallow sections.

Nearby Alternatives

When the reef is maxed out or too packed, the beachbreaks immediately north and south offer shorter, sandier options with more spread-out peaks. Pompano Beach breaks to the south and can pick up similar swell with a more beach-focused crowd.
