A sanity-restoring beachbreak on Florida's Panhandle, Grayton Beach sits at the mouth of a coastal lake outflow that feeds and rebuilds its sandbar with each tidal cycle. SE, S, and SSW swells are the ticket, ideally waist to overhead, with NW through ENE winds keeping the face clean. Low-to-incoming tide sharpens the banks and produces the most defined left and right peaks. All skill levels can find something here, and the crowd stays thin year-round. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through spring with hurricane pulses. Consistency: moderate, highly dependent on sandbar condition. The hazard worth flagging is not the surf but the permitted four-wheel-drive trucks that run the beach, so keep your eye out if you are walking the shoreline. Walton County lines up fifteen coastal lake outflows like this one along its coast, so if the bar here is blown out or flat, a short drive in either direction will likely reveal a fresher bank with better shape.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Grayton Beach draws a relaxed crowd and minimal localism. The lineup is generally open and welcoming across skill levels. Dawn patrol rarely means competing for waves. If a moderate swell and clean winds line up on a weekend, a few more surfers will show, but numbers stay manageable compared to more developed stretches of the Gulf Coast.

Access & Facilities

Park in the lot at the boardwalk and walk five minutes to the beach. The state park infrastructure means restrooms and basic amenities are on hand. Water quality is clean, part of the emerald-water character of this stretch of coast. Watch for four-wheel-drive trucks permitted to drive the beach, a real and underrated hazard especially when walking with a board.

Nearby Alternatives

With fifteen coastal lake outflows along Walton County's coast, neighboring lake mouths are worth checking when Grayton's bar is not cooperating. A short drive east or west along 30A will put you in front of similar setups that may be holding better shape on any given swell.
