A mellow, sand-bottomed beachbreak south of St. Augustine, Crescent Beach is the last rideable stretch before the notoriously sharky Matanzas Inlet. It runs on NE, E, and SE swell, handles a wide range of tides, and can even coax something fun out of windchop when the sandbars cooperate. Best size is knee-high to a couple feet overhead, rarely holding anything larger. This is Average Joe surf at its most honest: if the sand is stacking right up in St. Augustine, Crescent Beach will deliver, if the banks are blown out, expect nothing. Crowds stay mellow because serious rippers tend to seek better waves elsewhere. Bottom: sand. Season: September to March. Consistency: moderate, sandbor-dependent. Bring whatever board fits your mood and mind the sharks at Matanzas Inlet to the south.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is genuinely low-pressure. St. Augustine locals are relaxed and welcoming, and the wave's average quality naturally filters out the competitive crowd. If you encounter shoulder burn here, you may have taken a wrong turn. Respect the easy vibe and it stays that way.

Access & Facilities

Vehicle beach access via the Crescent Beach Ramp. A nominal fee applies for beach driving between March and August. Water quality is fair, historically passing tests over 95% of the time. Watch out for jellyfish, sea lice, and afternoon lightning in summer. Matanzas Inlet to the south is genuinely sharky, so stay aware.

Nearby Alternatives

When Crescent Beach is flat or the banks are dead, the St. Augustine area has better options to the north. Check breaks closer to the St. Augustine Pier or Vilano Beach, which can pick up more swell and sometimes hold better shape.
