One of Fort Lauderdale's most reliable sandbars, Commercial Pier sits just east of Commercial Boulevard in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and notably survived beach restoration programs that flattened most nearby spots. NNE swells and local wind swell both activate the break, with SE swell adding another angle. WNW winds keep the face clean. Works best at low to incoming tide, waist-high to overhead, and stays playful enough for beginners while still giving longboarders and fish riders something to work with. The crowd runs heavy, but the vibe stays welcoming. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through spring. Consistency: moderate to good during swell season. Stay clear of the pier structure itself, as currents around the pilings can catch you off guard.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect a heavy lineup on any decent swell. Despite the numbers, locals run a welcoming vibe, which makes Commercial Pier one of the more approachable spots on this stretch of coast. Dawn patrol cuts the crowd significantly and gives you cleaner sets before the onshore kicks in.

Access & Facilities

Access is easy via Commercial Boulevard. Street parking and lot options nearby. Lauderdale-by-the-Sea has food, rinse stations, and rental shops within a short walk. Water quality is clean despite the urban setting. The main hazard is the pier itself: keep your distance from the pilings, especially during stronger swells when currents pull toward the structure.

Nearby Alternatives

When Commercial Pier is blown out or maxed, Deerfield Beach Pier a few miles north offers a similar pier-break setup with shifting peaks. Sebastian Street and Las Olas are also worth checking if you want to work along the Fort Lauderdale coast for the best sandbar on the day.
