A low-key sandbar wedge on Florida's east coast, Bethune Beach breaks in front of a long seawall just south of the New Smyrna Inlet frenzy and draws a fraction of that crowd. SE swell is the primary driver, though any swell direction can light it up when size reaches 3ft and above. Low tide is where it performs best, pitching hollow wedges and bowly inside sections, but mid-high tide can still produce rideable peaks with an easier paddle. It suits all skill levels and the lineup stays genuinely mellow on most days, weekday or weekend. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through spring, with hurricane swells being the most powerful. Consistency: moderate. Always spend a few minutes on the beach reading sets before paddling out, especially on bigger days when the sandbar sits in only 1-2ft of water and the whitewash can drag you in every direction.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Surprisingly light crowds for a Central Florida break this close to NSB. Locals are welcoming and the vibe is relaxed. Even on clean weekend days you'll typically find space. Dawn patrol is rarely necessary but never hurts on hurricane swells when everyone wakes up to surf maps.

Access & Facilities

Parking lot access is straightforward but the entrance is easy to drive past. Lot fills on rare clear days but usually has room. The seawall is a reference point for where the main peak tends to sit. Watch for whatever marine life is sharing the water, the only regular hazard outside of the sandbar itself on big low-tide days.

Nearby Alternatives

New Smyrna Beach Inlet is a short drive north and offers more consistent, more powerful surf, but brings significantly heavier crowds and localism. Canaveral National Seashore to the south has multiple beach breaks worth exploring when Bethune is not firing.
