A double-sandbar beachbreak on Clearwater's north end, 880 Mandalay Blvd delivers two distinct ride opportunities on a single stretch of Gulf Coast sand. NW and W swells push energy through an outside bar where longboarders can work the slower, rolling faces, then the wave often reforms on the inside for shortboarders. The catch: the inside section dumps fast and shallow, so expect some punishment when it closes out. Works best at mid to high tide on E winds, with fall through spring offering the most consistent conditions. Hurricane season adds occasional overhead surf to the mix. Bottom: sand. Season: fall-spring plus hurricane swells. Consistency: moderate. Surfing the patrolled zone is prohibited, so stay north of the lifeguard stands and be out of the water by 9:30 a.m. When guards take their posts. Parking at the north end is sporadic and enforcement is real, so read every sign before you leave your vehicle.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are mellow most of the year with a welcoming lineup. Summer brings the worst pressure as vacationers and summer swells overlap. Dawn patrol in the shoulder months, particularly fall and early spring, delivers near-empty lineups. The local vibe is easy and beginner-friendly, but experienced surfers should expect a mixed-ability crowd.

Access & Facilities

Head north on Gulf Boulevard through Clearwater Beach and find 880 Mandalay Blvd. Parking exists but is patchy at the north end, pay close attention to posted signs to avoid fines. Public beach facilities are nearby. Stingrays are present year-round, so shuffle your feet in the shallows. Occasional red tide outbreaks affect water quality, check conditions before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

If 880 is flat or too crowded, the jetty at the south end of Clearwater Beach picks up SW swells and can produce a different angle of wave on the right conditions. Sand Key to the south offers additional beachbreak options when the swell window shifts.
