A steep, hollow left unloading off the jetty end at 5th Street is the only year-round surfing zone in Ocean City, Maryland, and one of the better NE-swell waves on the mid-Atlantic coast. Critical take-offs launch just in front of the jetty tip, with the wave walling south toward 8th Street groin on NE to E swells at 2-8ft, though the break handles big NE pulses. NW winds are the go-to offshore. S swell is wasted on the north side of the jetty, so check the forecast before paddling out. This is a wave for intermediates comfortable with steep drops and advanced surfers hunting the bigger NE groundswells. The lineup draws regulars, meaning crowd pressure is real most sessions. Bottom: mixed sand and structure. Season: Sep-Mar. Consistency: high. Watch for stormwater pipes exposed at high tide and summer surfing restrictions that choke access June through August.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Ocean City's only year-round surf zone concentrates regulars here whenever it breaks. Expect a competitive lineup on any decent swell, particularly in autumn and winter when restrictions lift. Dawn patrol in fall is your best shot at fewer bodies. Show respect to the regulars who surf this through the cold months.

Access & Facilities

Paved car park at the spot. Lifeguard coverage seasonally. Stormwater outflow pipes protrude into the surf at high tide and are a genuine hazard: know where they are before you paddle. Summer surfing restrictions apply, so confirm access dates. Food and board rentals available on the Ocean City strip.

Nearby Alternatives

If 5th Street is maxed or blown out, 12th Street picks up more sand and offers a more rippable, forgiving wave in the same NE swell window. For a right-hander in the region, check spots favoring SE to E swell further south toward the Delaware line.
