Jetty-influenced beachbreak lefts with more punch than most of Miami Beach's sand-bottom spots, 21st Street sits near the northern end of the hotel strip where N-NE swells refract off the jetty structure and peel down the beach in longer-than-average walls. Optimal conditions call for a clean N to NE groundswell at 2-6ft, westerly offshores, and a low to mid tide to keep the banks from washing out. The spot draws a consistent crowd given its reputation as one of Miami Beach's better waves, so expect a busy lineup on any decent swell. Bottom: sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: medium. Arrive early on northerly groundswell days to score the banks before the sea breeze fills in and the crowd thickens on the hotel strip.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is a well-known and often-crowded stretch. The Miami Beach hotel corridor funnels a lot of water into the lineup on any rideable swell. Localism is not heavy, but the crowd can be competitive. Midweek dawn patrol sessions during autumn swells are your best bet for fewer bodies.

Access & Facilities

Parking is available in a nearby car park, though it fills quickly on good surf days. Lifeguards are stationed along this stretch. Water quality is rated as residential-level pollution, so be aware after heavy rains. The hotel strip makes access straightforward but the sidewalk crowds can slow things down.

Nearby Alternatives

If 21st Street is blown out or too crowded, the south side of the main jetty can offer different angles on the same swell. Further north along Miami Beach, sandbars near the pier provide lefts and rights on similar N/NE swells with slightly different crowd dynamics.
