A World Surfing Reserve and home to caballito reed-boat fishermen who have ridden these lefts for 2,000 years, Punta Huanchaco sits 10km NW of Trujillo on Peru's north coast. S to SW swells are the primary engine, with SE to ESE winds going offshore, and the wave runs from the point all the way past the long pier for up to 800m on bigger days. Any tide works. It suits beginners through advanced surfers, the left is not hollow or gnarly, so even intermediates can find rhythm here, though weekends and Christmas-to-Easter season bring genuine crowds. Bottom: reef and sand mix. Season: year-round, most consistent April through October. Consistency: high. Bring a longboard or fish for the slower, walling sections, and a shortboard if you want to work the punchier hooks. Water quality is generally clean but the town generates some residential runoff worth noting.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup can get crowded on weekends and during the Christmas-to-Easter tourist season when Trujillanos flock to the beach. Locals are welcoming and the current naturally disperses the crowd across sections. Dawn patrol outside peak season offers the best chance of space.

Access & Facilities

Easily reached by frequent minibuses from Trujillo, about 1 hour by road. The front road allows easy parking, though keeping an eye on your vehicle is advised. Surf shops, schools, and board rentals are all available in town. Hostels line the front near the mirador with ocean-view rooms. The UNESCO mud city of Chan Chan is close by for non-surf days.

Nearby Alternatives

Chicama, roughly 1 hour north, is the go-to on big swell days when Huanchaco gets choppy and messy. Pacasmayo to the north offers another long left-point option. Salaverry Harbour, between the jetties south of town, produces an A-frame peak that handles bigger surf.
