Four grinding sections make Centinela one of Peru's best left pointbreaks, sitting roughly 5km off the Panamericana Norte near Huaura. A W swell is the trigger, with S through NW in the window, low tide sharpens everything. The hollow outside (4-10ft) is rocky, fast, and unforgiving, demanding real experience. Sandy inside walls (2-7ft) suit everyone from intermediates down to confident beginners. Bottom: mixed reef and sand. Season: April through September. Consistency: high. Bring two boards: a step-up for the outside and a standard shortboard or mid-length for the inside section when the swell turns NW and rides stretch past 200m.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions can be empty or near-empty despite the wave's quality. Weekend crowds arrive, and a local crew surfs the outside. Show respect, read the pecking order, and do not drop in on the rocks section. The place is taken seriously by everyone who surfs it regularly.

Access & Facilities

Exit the Panamericana Norte at Huaura km 152 and follow the beach track roughly 5km. No formal parking. A surf camp operates on site with camping and basic bungalows. Theft is a documented and ongoing problem: multiple surfer reports describe night-time robberies and bag theft while people are in the water. Do not leave valuables unattended. Barranca, a short drive north, has lodging and restaurants.

Nearby Alternatives

Bermejo, further north, offers an uncrowded left point with consistent trade-wind offshores when Centinela is maxing out or too onshore. Playa Grande near km 336 on the Panamericana provides right-hand beach break peaks as a change of direction. Carquin, 3km away, has a shorter, smaller and far less consistent lefthander hugging the headland for smaller swells.
