Chicama earns the title of world's longest rideable left by genuine geography: eight named sections peel along a 4km headland at Puerto Malabrigo, Central Peru, with makeable single runs exceeding 1km on the right swell. The ideal window is an 8-12ft SSW swell arriving at 200-210 degrees with a 14-second-plus period, paired with SE or E-SE offshore winds. Mid to high tide smooths out the inside sections, though La Punta and El Hombre both work across the full tidal range. Beginners can groove the softer inside walls, intermediate and advanced surfers will want size to link El Point through Las Tetas, Hotels, El Hombre, and into Pueblo. The lineup is welcoming by reputation, but zodiac-assisted surfers routinely snake paddlers who have spent 10-plus minutes fighting the NE sweep to hold position near the peak. Bottom: sand with scattered rock patches. Season: April through October. Consistency: medium on quality swells, reliable on smaller days. Kick out well before the pier as the sweep and pylon zone turn hazardous fast.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The sections spread crowd pressure across a long lineup that can comfortably absorb 100 surfers, but zodiac-boat drops have shifted the balance against paddlers. Locals are skilled, strong, and quick to the peak. Drop-ins happen when onlookers gamble on the inside surfer not making a long section. Dawn patrol and late afternoon are peak session times, surfing midday when wind is strongest will put you in a near-empty lineup.

Access & Facilities

Puerto Malabrigo is signed off the North Panamericana near Paiján (Km 614). The final 14km of road can take 40-plus minutes regardless of vehicle. Buses run from Trujillo, which has the nearest airport. Accommodation now ranges from budget hostels to comfortable options in town. Surf schools and zodiac assist services operate locally. Scattered rocks at La Punta and the pier zone are the main physical hazards. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When Chicama is small and sectiony, other point and reef breaks along the Peruvian North Coast can offer more punch. Pacasmayo, roughly an hour south, is another long left point that works on similar NW-W swells and provides a useful backup. The broader La Libertad region has additional beach and point options for those willing to explore.
