A high-performance left reef sitting between the super-points of Pacasmayo and Chicama on Peru's La Libertad coast, Puemape punches above its profile with a sharp, fast take-off and genuine cover-up potential. Best on S to SSW swells from 2 to 12ft, it needs low to mid tide and NE offshores to hold its shape. The drop is steep with rocks visible in your periphery, and the wave bends from a quick first barrel section into a sandier bay with long, tapered shoulders that maintain push. Winter S-SSW swells are the priority: SW-W will close out the initial barrel and shift the take-off to the rocky finger's end. NE winds are rare all day, so dawn patrol is non-negotiable. Summer swells disturb the sand and compromise the bottom section. Advanced surfers only. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: autumn-winter. Consistency: high when conditions align. Paddle out from the bay well south of the peak to keep your fins and skin intact.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineups are light by Peruvian point-break standards. The semi-remote location filters crowds, but consequences for mistakes are real: rocks near the peak, sea urchins, and strong arm-burning rips running north. Respect the paddle-out protocol and give way to surfers who clearly know the reef.

Access & Facilities

About 30 minutes by road from Chicama, with no parking area or public facilities on site. Puemape Surf Camp provides accommodation nearby. Paddle out from the bay to the south of the break. Urchins and persistent northward rips are the primary hazards. Bring everything you need including water and food.

Nearby Alternatives

Chicama, 30 minutes south, is the benchmark endless left of the region and worth the drive when Puemape is too small or the wind turns onshore. Pacasmayo, to the north, offers a longer, more point-like left that works on similar swell windows and handles a wider range of surfers.
