A fast, powerful reef break on the central Peruvian coast, Bermejo delivers punchy waves that reward surfers who can handle a committed drop and read an uneven bottom. It picks up swell from 3ft and holds well past 10ft, best approached on SW to NW groundswell with offshore winds. Low to mid tide is the window: as the tide fills, submerged reef sections become invisible hazards that demand local knowledge. Weekdays you may have the lineup to yourself, weekends draw a small but present crowd. Bottom: reef. Season: austral autumn through winter (April to October) when South Pacific groundswell is most consistent. Consistency: moderate to good in peak months. Bring a board with enough volume to paddle into fast-moving sets and commit early on the drop, because hesitation on the reef here is penalised quickly.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are quiet, often just a handful of surfers or none at all. Weekends bring a few more faces but the lineup stays manageable. No heavy localism reported, but like any semi-remote reef, showing patience and reading the order in the water goes a long way.

Access & Facilities

From the North Panamericana, exit at km 223 and follow the beach track roughly 3km. Suitable for most vehicles. No formal facilities on site, so carry water, food, and a first-aid kit. Urchins and unseen reef at high tide are the main hazards. Booties are worth considering.

Nearby Alternatives

Central Peru's coastline holds several point and reef setups within reasonable driving distance along the Panamericana. When Bermejo is too big or the swell direction is off, explore the beachbreaks and points further north or south along this stretch of coast.
