Quick barrel sections on small, clean swells define Tamarind, a right-hand pointbreak on Nicaragua's Pacific coast south of San Juan del Sur. It needs a solid S to SSW swell to show its best, with NE offshore winds cleaning up the face, and it runs across all tides without major preference. The catch is that Tamarind sits in a swell shadow and typically reads smaller than the open-coast breaks nearby, so what looks like a 4ft day elsewhere may deliver 2-3ft here. When the stars align on a clean, head-high S swell with light NE trades, short barrel sections open up, rewarding quick, committed surfing from intermediate to experienced riders. On most days, though, the point breaks into disconnected sections that shut down before they connect. Bottom: reef point. Season: Southern Hemisphere swell window, May through October. Consistency: medium. The security warning here is real: Banditos have been reported working the area at dusk, so leave valuables locked away and do not leave gear unattended on the beach after sunset.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are only occasional here, partly because the wave is inconsistent and partly because access requires a walk over the hill from El Remanso. On the rare day it fires, intermediates and shortboarders will be sharing a short lineup. Localism is not flagged as a concern, but the usual respectful etiquette applies.

Access & Facilities

Reach Tamarind by hiking over the hill from El Remanso. There are no facilities on-site, no parking, no food or water, so come self-sufficient. The security risk at dusk is genuine: leave valuables behind entirely.

Nearby Alternatives

When Tamarind is too sectiony or too small, Playa Maderas a short distance away is the most consistent beachbreak option in the San Juan del Sur area, often hollow and rarely flat. For longer drives and more serious swell, the reef setups around Popoyo and the rivermouth bars at Playa Colorado offer significantly better quality when conditions line up.
