El Penon is a heavy, hollow reef break on Nicaragua's Pacific coast that demands serious commitment before you paddle out. It needs SW to NW groundswell pushing 5-6ft to wake up, and really hits its stride between 6-10ft, holding well overhead and beyond on the right day. Offshore winds are essential to keep the face clean on what is an unforgiving, fast-breaking wave. Crowds are almost nonexistent on weekdays, with only a handful of surfers showing up on weekends, but this is not a wave that forgives inexperience in any lineup size. Bottom: reef and rock. Season: May through November (Southern Hemisphere winter groundswells). Consistency: moderate to occasional. Car break-ins at the access point are a known and documented hazard, so leave nothing visible in your vehicle and consider arranging transport through locals in Camuy who know the spot and can point you in the right direction.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

One of the emptier heavy waves in Central America. Weekday sessions can be nearly solo, with a small crew on weekends. The wave's consequence and access keep the numbers low. Respect the handful of surfers who do show up and read the lineup before paddling into the peak.

Access & Facilities

Ask locally in Camuy for directions, this is standard practice and the community is aware of the spot. Car security is a serious and well-documented issue at the access point. Do not leave valuables in your vehicle. There are no facilities at the break. Come self-sufficient with water, food, and first aid. The reef is unforgiving on wipeouts.

Nearby Alternatives

Nicaragua's Pacific side has a range of reef and beach breaks within driving distance that work across different swell and wind conditions. When El Penon is too big or conditions are wrong, look for softer beach break options further up or down the coast to match your level.
