A fickle but rewarding right-hand peak on Nicaragua's Pacific side, Manzanillo fires when a SW swell hits the rock-and-sand bottom at the right size and angle. It needs SW swell, chest-high to double-overhead, with NE offshore wind to show its best form. The wrong direction makes it mushy or a closeout, so patience is part of the deal. When conditions align, intermediate to advanced surfers get short, fast, hollow peaks with real power. Mid to high tide is optimal. Bottom: mixed rock and coral-sand. Season: April to August. Consistency: medium to fickle. Crowds build quickly when it's on, and the lineup can get competitive despite no heavy local crew, so respect the rotation. Access is boat-only from the main road, which naturally keeps the crowd manageable on average days. Bring booties if the reef is exposed at lower stages of tide, as the inside sections have sharp rock and coral. Check swell direction obsessively before making the trip.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are moderate when conditions are good. There is no entrenched local crew, but when word gets out that it is firing, surfers arrive fast from the region. The vibe is generally doable. Respect the lineup, wait your turn, and things tend to stay civil. Dawn sessions before the wind comes up are the move.

Access & Facilities

Access is boat-only. No facilities on site. Coordinate transport from the nearest town and bring everything you need including water, food, and a first-aid kit. Booties are strongly recommended due to sharp reef on the inside. Water quality is fair.

Nearby Alternatives

If Manzanillo is flat or blown out, the broader Pacific side of Nicaragua has consistent beachbreak options that handle a wider swell window. Look for beach peaks in the region when the SW swell lacks the right angle for Manzanillo to switch on.
