One of Nicaragua's longest waves, Puerto Sandino breaks over a rivermouth sandbar roughly half a mile offshore, delivering left-hand rides of 300-500m when conditions align. SSW swell is the sweet spot, with S and SW also working well, incoming tide and calm to light NE-to-E offshores find the full length and barrel potential. Size range runs 3ft to 12ft-plus, with magic conditions at 8-10ft on the face. The break suits intermediate to advanced surfers, and while the lineup is generally welcoming, competitive tension rises when multiple boats arrive simultaneously. Bottom: mixed sand and reef. Season: April through September, with November worth watching for late pulses. Consistency: high. Strong currents and floating river debris are the real hazards here, not localism. Boat access is strongly recommended given the exposed location, powerful currents, and the logistical reality of getting hurt a half-mile from shore.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup reads as welcoming most of the time, populated mainly by visiting surfers staying at nearby camps. Pressure builds when multiple boat crews converge on the same peak. Dawn sessions midweek, before the boats stack up, are the clearest window. Competitive moments happen but heavy localism is not the norm.

Access & Facilities

Boat access from Playa Miramar is the standard approach, arranged through local surf camps including Puerto Sandino Surf Resort and Miramar Surf Camp. Paddling from shore is technically possible but strongly discouraged given the distance, currents, and safety logistics. No facilities at the break itself. Water quality is fair and degrades after heavy rain due to the rivermouth outflow. Bring reef booties if prone to reef contact, and pack more water than you think you need.

Nearby Alternatives

When Puerto Sandino is blown out or the boat isn't running, Punta Miramar holds consistent lefts with fast inside runners and tube sections closer to shore. Pipes, north of Miramar Point, delivers rocky beachbreak barrels in small to medium swells. El Transito and Playa Ausuchillas are further options when the primary swell window is undersized.
