A-frame beach peaks about 30 minutes north of San Juan Del Sur put Maderas at the cultural heart of Nicaraguan surfing, drawing a wide mix of beginners, locals, and traveling surfers year-round. The wave works best on S to SW swell at chest-high to a couple feet overhead, with calm to light offshore E-NE winds holding the face clean. Mid-to-high tide is the sweet spot, dead low tends to shut things down. Sand bottom and two main peaks offer rights and lefts for nearly every ability, though size sorts the lineup quickly above head high. Bottom: Sand. Season: All summer (southern hemisphere swell window). Consistency: Reliable, picks up both south and north swells. Paddle fitness matters here since sets can be inconsistent and the crowd means you'll work for your waves.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Maderas is arguably Nicaragua's busiest lineup. Expect 15-20 surfers most days, 30-plus on peak weekends. The vibe tends toward mellow given the mix of learners and travelers, but it is competitive when swell is up. Dawn patrol and late afternoon sessions consistently thin the pack. Come here to have fun, not to dominate the peak.

Access & Facilities

Reachable by car roughly 30 minutes north of San Juan Del Sur via La Chocolata road and over the mountain, or by boat. The road includes a river crossing that is passable in a 4WD during rainy season but demands caution. Accommodation, rentals, and food are available near the beach. Water quality is generally clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When Maderas is maxed out or over-crowded, Popoyo to the north is the logical step-up, offering more powerful and hollow conditions for experienced surfers. Playa Marsella, passed on the route in, is a softer option on smaller days.
