A mellow beachbreak on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, El Coco sits just off the main road south of San Juan del Sur, making it one of the easiest surf beaches to reach in the region. S to SW swells in the 2-6ft range are the sweet spot, with NE offshore winds cleaning things up and mid to high tide generally producing the better shape. Wave quality runs a notch below nearby Hermosa or Yanke, but the trade-off is real: this beach runs consistently smaller and more manageable than breaks to the north, and the crowd factor stays low even on solid south swell pulses. Bottom: sand. Season: May through October for Pacific south swell season. Consistency: medium. If the bigger reef and beachbreak options up the coast are maxing out or swarming with surfers, El Coco gives you a functional alternative where you can actually get waves.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

One of the quieter stretches on this stretch of coast. The manageable size and lack of standout quality keeps the competitive surfers at breaks like Maderas or Popoyo. Expect a relaxed lineup, though weekends from San Juan del Sur can bring casual crowds.

Access & Facilities

The main coastal road runs directly to the beach, so access is straightforward with free parking. No facilities on site, so bring water and food. San Juan del Sur is close enough for resupply, accommodation, and board rentals if needed.

Nearby Alternatives

When El Coco is flat or the sandbars aren't cooperating, Playa Maderas to the south is the go-to, offering more consistent shape and the occasional hollow section. Playa Hermosa and El Yanke offer better-defined peaks for surfers willing to navigate rougher access roads.
