A mellow left-hand beachbreak on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, Las Penitas sits 18 km west of León on a stretch of volcanic black-sand beach that sees surprisingly little traffic for the quality it produces. SW and W swells push consistent lefts through the rainy season months, from April through October, with offshore winds most reliable in the early morning. Works across all tides, starting to show shape from around 3ft and holding through 10ft plus on bigger swells. The crowd is thin on weekdays and only light on weekends, making it a genuine find for intermediate surfers who want space in the water. Bottom: beach. Season: Apr-Oct. Consistency: moderate to good during swell season. The village of Poneloya sits 4 km north, and the lineup breaks close enough to the Playa Roca Hotel that you can watch sets from the restaurant and time your paddle-out without rushing.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday crowds are rare. Weekend sessions draw a handful of surfers at most. No meaningful local pressure reported, though standard respect in the water applies. Nicaragua as a whole is still lightly traveled by surf standards, and Las Penitas reflects that. Dawn patrol almost guarantees empty peaks.

Access & Facilities

A 20-minute bus from León drops you directly in front of Playa Roca Hotel, less than 50 m from the water. Accommodation, food, and a bar are right on the beachfront. No need for a rental car. Bring reef booties for urchin exposure on the point section. Potable water in the village is limited, so carry your own.

Nearby Alternatives

Poneloya, 4 km north, offers additional beach peaks on the same swell. When Las Penitas goes flat, the coast toward Corinto has a handful of lesser-known points worth exploring on bigger NW groundswells.
