Popoyo's main reef sits at the southern end of Playa Guasacate and delivers one of Nicaragua's most consistent performances: an A-frame slab of rock reef generating punchy lefts and rights with enough face to carve, whack, and occasionally duck into short barrel sections. S to SW swells from 2ft to double-overhead are the sweet spot, with NE offshores blowing clean most of the year, reportedly 300-plus days. Mid tide is optimal, though it holds character across all tides until sets start closing out in the double-overhead range. This is a wave that rewards experienced shortboarders but tolerates intermediates at moderate size. Crowds are heavy and the local vibe is competitive and intimidating, so read the lineup before paddling out. Bottom: submerged rock reef. Season: year-round, strongest April through October. Consistency: among the highest in Central America. Cross the rivermouth at the south end of town to reach the break, and leave nothing visible in your car.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Popoyo is the most-surfed break in Nicaragua. Expect a dense, competitive lineup mixing locals and visiting surfers. Localism is real and the vibe is intimidating. Don't snake, wait your turn, and give established locals priority on the better sets. Dawn patrol on weekdays offers the best window before the crowd builds. Weekend pressure is lighter than expected given the overall volume.

Access & Facilities

Drive the Panamerican Highway toward Rivas, cross the Ochomogo bridge, and take the right toward Chacocente. Surf camp signs mark the turn. Park at the south end of town, free but unsecured. Cross the rivermouth to paddle out. After heavy rain the rivermouth can carry runoff, affecting water quality briefly. A surf school and several surf camps operate nearby with boards and basic supplies available.

Nearby Alternatives

When Popoyo closes out in large swell, Playa Santana nearby offers heavy beachbreak barrels that handle size well. Playa Colorado's rivermouth sandbars are known for some of the fastest, hollest barrels on the Pacific side and are worth checking when the banks are right.
