A crescent-shaped beachbreak that hoovers up S to SW swell year-round, El Transito sits on Nicaragua's Pacific coast roughly an hour from Managua. SW and SSW swells from 3-8ft at under 16 seconds hit the best, bouncing off scattered rock protrusions to generate multiple shifting peaks across a mostly sand bottom. E to NE offshores blow 250-plus days a year, keeping conditions cleaner here than at many regional alternatives. Best from waist-high to just overhead at mid to high tide, the wave turns inconsistent and closes out fast once it pushes past a foot overhead. Expect a mellow visiting-surfer crowd, genuine local warmth, and minimal localism pressure. Bottom: sand with reef patches. Season: April to September prime, but rideable all year. Consistency: high. Pack a versatile board quiver since the point on the south end and a barreling right wedge within walking distance reward surfers who explore beyond the main peak.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is regularly mellow, rated 2 out of 5 for crowds with a welcoming local vibe. Surf camps further north can push a visiting crowd onto the beach on smaller days, so small-swell weekends are the most competitive. Dawn patrol gives you the cleanest conditions and the least competition regardless.

Access & Facilities

Direct highway access makes this one of the easier Pacific Nicaragua drives from Managua, roughly an hour out. Free roadside parking. No facilities on site, so bring water, snacks, and sunscreen. Scattered reef patches are the main physical hazard, booties are optional but useful at low tide. Water quality is clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When El Transito closes out in larger swells, a 30-minute boat trip north reaches Puerto Sandino, one of Nicaragua's longer lefts with rides up to 300 yards on good days. Hemmies, about 15 minutes south by boat, offers fast reef walls for surfers comfortable with heavier, shallower conditions.
