A horseshoe-shaped submerged reef at the north end of Playa Iguanas, Panga Drops offers shifty lefts and rights that peel across a large playing field with barrels and fading shoulders on a good SW to SSW swell. Offshore E to NE winds are the go, though the exposed position means even light offshores can chop the surface quickly, so glassy dawn sessions are worth timing. Mid tides are ideal, though the reef fires at all stages. Best from head-high to triple overhead, with the right capable of producing a long, Sunset Beach-style wall on bigger days. Works for intermediates in smaller surf and handles advanced surfers when it's pumping. Crowds are generally mellow, mainly visiting surfers, but the wide spread of peaks disperses the lineup naturally. Bottom: submerged rock reef. Season: April through September prime, with November sleeper swells possible. Consistency: high. Note the bull shark sightings on this reef and river debris after heavy rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe here is welcoming and low-pressure. Visiting surfers make up most of the lineup, and the reef's wide horseshoe shape means waves spread the crowd across multiple peaks. Colorados draws the heavier local and tourist traffic, so if that spot is packed, Panga Drops is the sane alternative.

Access & Facilities

Stay at Iguanas for the easiest access. Without accommodation there, plan to boat in or hike from Gigante to avoid a punishing paddle. No facilities on site. Bring water and wax. After heavy rain, the nearby river runs farm runoff into the lineup, so check conditions before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

Colorados rivermouth sandbars, just down the beach, offer some of the fastest and hollowest barrels on the Nicaraguan Pacific side but pull a heavier crowd. Popoyo, further up the coast, delivers a more symmetrical reef peak suitable for a range of boards when Panga Drops goes onshore.
