A mellow beachbreak cove south of San Juan del Sur, El Remanso catches S to SW swells and delivers short, manageable waves that rarely exceed head-high before backing off. Offshore winds blow from the NE, keeping faces clean across most tides. Size sweet spot is 2-4ft, anything pushing 6ft and the beach closes out quickly, offering little reward. The crowd is light on most days, drawing beginners, improvers, and the occasional longboarder looking for uncrowded water away from the resort noise of San Juan del Sur. Bottom: sand. Season: May through November (Southern Hemisphere winter swell window). Consistency: medium. Come at dawn when winds are glassiest and bring a learner-friendly board, as the shore break is forgiving enough to fall on but the session length per wave is short, so you'll want volume underfoot to maximise ride count.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is not a reported concern. The break sits outside the main resort zone, so crowds are light compared to more publicised spots in the region. A quiet mid-week morning will typically offer near-empty conditions. Weekend proximity to San Juan del Sur can bring a few extra surfers, mostly beginners.

Access & Facilities

El Remanso is reached by heading south from San Juan del Sur along the coastal road. Parking is free and there are no facilities on-site, so bring water, food, and sun protection. No reported pollution or significant hazards, though always check for shore dump on the sand.

Nearby Alternatives

When El Remanso is too small or closing out, Playa Maderas is the go-to step-up, offering more consistent and occasionally hollow peaks. Playa Tamarindo just beyond provides quicker barrel opportunities for intermediate surfers ready to progress.
