A punchy beachbreak centred on a rivermouth on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, El Astillero sits on the Rivas-Carazo provincial border roughly 15km from Popoyo. S to SW swells light it up best, with the rights off the rivermouth getting hollow and hitting hard when conditions align. NE offshores clean it up. It handles a wide size window, starting to work around 3-5ft and holding well past 8ft. Intermediate surfers will feel at home here, and the lineup is rarely crowded. Bottom: sand with rocks past the rivermouth. Season: May-November. Consistency: medium. Leave nothing of value in your vehicle here, and watch the rocks on the north side of the rivermouth.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This stretch sees light crowds most of the time. Weekends stay empty by most accounts. No aggressive localism reported, but the relative remoteness keeps the lineup self-selecting. Come mid-week during peak swell season if you want the place to yourself.

Access & Facilities

No facilities on site. Parking is free but petty theft from vehicles is a known issue, so travel light. Most visiting surfers base themselves at Popoyo and either drive or arrange a guide for the run down. No food, water, or rentals at the break. The estuary and river proximity can affect water quality after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

Popoyo, roughly 15km north, is the regional hub and offers multiple setups across a range of swells. Punta Miramar holds consistent lefts with fast inside sections when Astillero is too raw or too small.
