A river-fed sandbar on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, Colorados delivers fast, hollow beachbreak peaks that punch well above their weight for a sand-bottom wave. SSW to SW swell is the sweet spot, with NE winds blowing straight offshore. Medium tide is the target, though the bar can work across most tides depending on swell size. The rights are the main event: quick, hollow, capable of proper barrel sections from chest-high to two-to-three feet overhead. The lefts are slightly more forgiving but still racey and punchier than most beachbreaks in the region. Intermediate to advanced surfers will get the most from it. The river mouth keeps the sandbar fed but also means farm runoff after heavy rain can foul the water, particularly in October. Bottom: Sand. Season: April-October. Consistency: Good when swell is in range. Check conditions before paddling out after significant rainfall, the water can go from fair to genuinely dirty fast.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect a moderate crowd when it is firing. The shifting peaks distribute surfers across multiple takeoff spots, which takes some pressure off the main peak. Locals are manageable if you show straightforward respect: wait your turn, don't snake, and read the lineup before asserting yourself. Crowd density climbs with swell quality.

Access & Facilities

Staying at Iguanas is the most straightforward option and puts you on the doorstep. Without accommodation there, access requires a boat or a hike. Bring your own water and food for sessions. After rains, river debris in the water is a real hazard, and the river runoff can make water quality poor. Watch for the shallow impact zone on the bigger sets.

Nearby Alternatives

When Colorados is closing out in larger swell or the river is running dirty, the broader Popoyo area has options that handle more size. Reef setups nearby offer an escape from beachbreak inconsistency during big pulse swells.
