Safi delivers one of the heaviest barreling sand points in Morocco, sitting right off the coast of the town that shares its name, roughly 280 km south of Casablanca. It fires on W swells with an E wind holding up the face, working best at low tide when the slab character is fully exposed. Overhead to triple-overhead is the functional size window, and anything smaller misses the energy needed to trigger the barrels that have drawn pros and barrel-hunters here in recent years. This is strictly an advanced wave: short-period sets are manageable, but the full-power swells that make Safi worth the trip demand experience with heavy, punishing slabs. Crowds stay moderate simply because the wave breaks only once or twice a year, but when it does fire, the lineup fills fast. Bottom: rocky sandy point. Season: winter. Consistency: fickle, event-level rarity. Paddle out prepared for exhausting shoulder burn and strong currents typical of a heavy slab point.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Because Safi only truly switches on once or twice per winter, the crowds are context-dependent. When word gets out that a swell is lighting it up, expect a full lineup quickly. Local bodyboarders are an established presence and hold respect in the water. Approach with humility, wait your turn, and the vibe is manageable.

Access & Facilities

Drive to the town of Safi and follow the coast road to the point. Water quality is clean, better than proximity to a working town might suggest. No specific surf infrastructure on-site, so bring your own water and supplies. Hazards are significant: exposed rocks, unpredictable slab sections, and strong currents demand full situational awareness before and during your session.

Nearby Alternatives

When Safi is too small or flat, the broader stretch of Morocco's Atlantic coast between Essaouira and Agadir offers beach breaks and gentler points that function in smaller, more consistent swell windows. Essaouira's wind-exposed beaches are a viable fallback for those chasing rideable waves without the commitment of a heavy slab.
