Fast, wind-affected beach break on the Atlantic edge of Essaouira, a walled medina town on Morocco's central coast. It responds to NW-SW Atlantic groundswell and works at all tides, though power and shape shift noticeably with size. Onshore winds dominate here more than almost anywhere in Morocco, which keeps the waves punchy but choppy most days. Small days suit learners, anything over head-high gets heavy and unpredictable fast. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring for swell, summer for wind sports. Consistency: moderate for surf, near-constant for wind. If you arrive to blown-out onshore slop, check the point setups further south along the coast where the headlands provide more shelter. The beach sits on the south side of town as you enter from the main road, impossible to miss, and backs onto a wide open strand busy with footballers, dromedaries, and the occasional persistent hustler near the carpark.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup pressure is low year-round, and especially quiet in winter when the beach empties out completely. No significant localism reported. The real social friction here is onshore: persistent vendors and drug dealers work the beach approach, so be politely firm and keep gear locked.

Access & Facilities

The beach is at the southern entrance to Essaouira town, a short walk or taxi from the medina. Parking is available. Essaouira has cafes, restaurants, and surf rental shops catering to learners. Water quality is generally acceptable but avoid surfing after heavy rain. Watch for rips during bigger swells.

Nearby Alternatives

When Essaouira is unsurfable, the coastline south of town holds several more sheltered point and reef setups that clean up in the same swell. Safi, a couple of hours north, is one of Morocco's better-known point breaks and worth the drive on a solid NW groundswell.
