Sandy beach break at the tip of the African continent, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean just 12 km west of Tangier. Cap Spartel and the nearby shores of Sol Beach and Achakkar Beach pick up Atlantic swells funneling through the Strait of Gibraltar, with NW to W swell directions giving the most rideable conditions. Offshore winds blow from the east, keeping faces cleaner in the morning before sea breezes set in. Size range is modest, typically 2-4ft, which suits beginners and casual surfers looking for an uncrowded session away from the busier surf towns to the south. Bottom: Sand. Season: Oct to Mar. Consistency: moderate, dependent on Atlantic swell penetrating the Strait. Arrive early in the day to catch the cleaner conditions before the wind turns onshore, and leave anything valuable locked out of sight at the car park.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup pressure is low compared to established spots. Local families and beginners share the water, and the vibe is relaxed. The area attracts tourists from Tangier, so weekends in summer can see more beach traffic, though the surf crowd stays thin.

Access & Facilities

Reachable by taxi or car from Tangier in under 20 minutes via the coast road. The Cap Spartel lighthouse is a landmark. Basic facilities exist nearby, with food and water available in the area. No dedicated surf schools on site, but the proximity to Tangier means rentals are accessible. Watch for rocky sections toward the headland, stick to the sandy stretches.

Nearby Alternatives

If Cap Spartel is flat, the Atlantic coast south toward Asilah and Moulay Bousselham opens up more consistent and better-quality beach breaks. For more serious surf, the long runs down to Anchor Point near Taghazout are worth the journey when this stretch is uninspiring.
