A mellow, user-friendly bay break north of Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita draws everyone from Mexican national longboard champions to first-timers holding foam boards. SW, W, and WNW swells are the bread and butter here, with an E to SE wind keeping faces clean most winter mornings. Works best waist-high to just overhead, around 2-6ft, anything over 6ft tends to close out, and the better waves in the region fire elsewhere. Best season runs November through April, when consistent NW and SW pulses fill the bay. Bottom: sand and rock mix. Season: Nov-Apr peak, some summer S swell. Consistency: medium. Avoid Christmas and Semana Santa unless you enjoy surfing in a crowded pool of beginners who have never worn a leash. Dawn patrol in the shoulder months is your best shot at an uncrowded session.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Sayulita is busy. Surf schools park students in the lineup daily, and the town fills hard at Christmas and Easter. That said, the local crew is mellow and the vibe is generally doable. Respect in the water means giving waves and being patient. Watch for leashless beginners drifting boards downwave into other surfers.

Access & Facilities

Drive north from Puerto Vallarta on Hwy 200 and take the clearly signed Sayulita turnoff, roughly 40km north. Parking is plentiful. Board rentals and lessons are right on the beach. Good cheap tacos in town. Water quality is generally clean but degrades after heavy rain due to estuary runoff at the rivermouth.

Nearby Alternatives

When Sayulita closes out or crowds overwhelm, Punta de Mita to the south offers more exposed, higher-quality reef waves for intermediate to advanced surfers. San Pancho (San Francisco), a few kilometers north, is quieter and worth a look on the same swell.
