A mellow reef-and-rock right at Punta de Mita that rewards patience and punishes optimism, El Anclote sits inside a partially sheltered bay on Nayarit's Riviera Nayarit coast. SSW swell is the primary driver, and you need a solid 4ft-plus on the forecast before this spot actually delivers head-high waves at the takeoff zone between the breakwater and the rocks to the east. Offshore winds from the north and northeast tidy up the face. Best at low to mid tide, when the reef focuses the energy enough to produce long, walling rights that a longboard or mid-length can turn and trim all the way to the sand. Even so, the bay's sheltered geometry filters out most of the swell power, so what looks like a 3-4ft forecast often arrives as knee-to-thigh high mush. Crowd reality is split: quiet on weekdays, competitive on weekends, and consistently dominated by SUPs regardless of day. Bottom: reef and rock. Season: May to October SSW swell window. Consistency: low to moderate. Bring a longboard or mid-length as your primary craft, and keep expectations calibrated to a fun cruising wave rather than a performance session.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays see a light lineup. Weekends bring a mix of resort guests and local surfers. SUPs are a persistent and aggressive presence at every tide and swell size, renting from shops steps away on the beach. When rideable sets are scarce, every wave gets picked off by a stand-up paddler before a prone surfer can reach it. Plan for this.

Access & Facilities

From the Oxxo on the main road, walk downhill toward the hotel and restaurant beach of Punta de Mita, then head east past the breakwater. Restaurants, rental shops, and water are all along the beachfront. The wave is easy to reach with no technical access issue.

Nearby Alternatives

When Anclote is dribbling, La Lancha to the east picks up more swell and handles overhead-plus conditions on a proper reef. Taxis can get you there but returning is harder to arrange. El Faro to the west is another option but involves a long walk over rocks and cobblestones, or a boat transfer through local operators.
