A fun, somewhat soft right-hand reef break about 40 minutes from Puerto Vallarta, Punta Burros delivers consistent summer south swell with a forgiving character that rewards a wide range of surfers. SW and S swells in the chest-high to overhead range are the sweet spot, with N to NE offshores keeping faces clean. Low to mid tide produces the best shape on the right, a lower-quality left is also on offer. The lineup gets moderately crowded given the resort proximity, but locals are friendly and accessible to respectful visitors. Bottom: reef. Season: May through October. Consistency: reliable during summer south swell season. Bring a longboard or fish for small days, as the wave rewards float over drive, and watch the reef and urchins on low tide entries.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The Palladium Vallarta Resort next door funnels consistent traffic into this lineup. Expect moderate crowds, especially on weekends and during peak summer months. Locals are present but generally welcoming if you surf with awareness and show respect in the lineup. Dawn patrol cuts the crowd significantly.

Access & Facilities

Three access options: park or stay at Palladium Vallarta Resort and walk 10 minutes, park roadside and walk 20 minutes, or hire a panga from El Enclote or a nearby fishing village. Water quality stays clean. Watch for reef, rocks, and urchins, particularly during low tide paddle-outs.

Nearby Alternatives

Puerto Vallarta's broader coastline has several beach breaks that handle different swell directions when Punta Burros is flat or maxed out. The Nayarit coast north of here picks up similar S and SW groundswell with less foot traffic at several lesser-known reef and point setups.
