A fast left-hander peeling off the point plus a punchy beach peak in front of the river mouth give San Pancho two distinct waves in one compact bay on Nayarit's Riviera. The point works best on S to NW swell with E or NE offshore winds, producing hollow, powerful sections that get sucked dry around low tide. Size needs to be at least 5-6ft to wake the place up, and it handles well overhead surf without falling apart. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find the most to work with here, especially on the peak, which can barrel hard at lower water. Paddling out near estuary outflow means water quality is a genuine concern after rain. Bottom: point and beach mix. Season: May through November for S and SW swell, October to March for NW. Consistency: regular. Bring a board with volume enough to generate speed through the hollow sections, and check the river after heavy rain before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekend crowds stay light by regional standards, though proximity to Sayulita, which has developed into a packed surf town, does funnel traffic this way when Sayulita is blown out or maxed. Intermediate surfers dominate the lineup, and the vibe is generally relaxed. Dawn sessions midweek give the most room.

Access & Facilities

No formal parking area means arriving early on foot or by taxi is the practical move. Camping is available nearby. Water quality at the river-mouth peak drops after heavy rain due to estuary runoff, so time sessions accordingly. The town of San Pancho has basic amenities within walking distance.

Nearby Alternatives

Sayulita is a short drive south and offers reef options when San Pancho is small, though the crowds there are significantly heavier. Punta de Mita, farther south at the northern tip of Bahia de Banderas, is more exposed to swell and provides year-round options across multiple setups.
