A left pointbreak that peels along a boulder-lined cliff draped in jungle, Santa Cruz sits about 25km south of San Blas on Nayarit's coast and rewards patience. It needs a solid S or SW swell to switch on, and when that swell arrives the wave hugs the cliff face and rolls through on a long, hollow ride with sharp rocks underneath demanding respect. Low to mid tide is optimal, easterly winds keep it clean, and the working size runs from 3ft up to 10ft-plus on the biggest summer pulses. Intermediate surfers will find it manageable on average days, though a powerful swell will punish anyone who bails carelessly onto the boulders. Bottom: boulder reef. Season: summer swell season, May through October. Consistency: medium. The nearby rivermouth to the north can offer an alternative on smaller swells, but shark activity there is a genuine concern worth weighing before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are rare and the town is genuinely relaxed and friendly. A small local community lives here, and the standard rule applies: come respectful, take nothing for granted. community reports locals have specifically asked visitors not to be disrespectful. Low-key vibe, but it is someone's home break.

Access & Facilities

Reachable by car or bus, roughly 25km south of San Blas and about an hour from Tepic inland. The town is a small fishing village. No formal parking area or surf facilities. Bring everything you need including water, food, and a first-aid kit. The river is reportedly used for washing clothes and is not clean. Rain, lightning, and bugs are part of the rainy season experience here.

Nearby Alternatives

Aticama pointbreak lefts to the south are more consistent on S-SW pulses and considered excellent quality when Santa Cruz is undersized. San Pancho (San Francisco) is a short drive south and offers a different wave environment when swell direction or size does not suit the point.
