An 80 km stretch of beach with virtually no one on it is the headline at Playa Novillero, a beach break in northern Nayarit close to the Sinaloa border. SSW swell from May through October produces the best conditions, walling up and adding punch as size increases. NW groundswell keeps things moving in winter but tends toward the mushy end of the spectrum. Offshore winds in the morning are the trigger for cleaner faces. Works across all tides, though the gently sloping bottom means a paddle-out of 200-300 yards through four or five lines of whitewater on bigger days. Any skill level can find something here given the ability to pick peaks across a massive stretch of sand. A strong southward current runs consistently, so track your position on the beach. Bottom: sand. Season: May to October primary, winter secondary. Consistency: moderate year-round, better in swell season. Bring a leash you trust and check current direction before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Five resident surfers, essentially zero localism pressure. The handful of regulars are reportedly welcoming to visiting surfers. Semana Santa floods the beach with domestic tourists but that crowd is not a surf crowd. Outside that week, expect the place largely to yourself on any given session.

Access & Facilities

From the town of Acaponeta, head west toward the coast. Basic accommodation and food available in the village, including board rentals. Spanish is essential here as English is rarely spoken. Camping is an option. The nearest larger city with more services is Mazatlán to the north.

Nearby Alternatives

Mazatlán's breaks to the north offer more infrastructure and consistent beach and point options when Novillero is flat or too onshore. Further south in Nayarit, San Blas has point breaks and river mouth setups that light up on the right SW swell.
