A punchy beach break in Mar del Plata, Varese delivers hollow, powerful peaks when SE swells push in from the South Atlantic. It works best from mid to high tide, picking up swells in the 3-10ft range with a SE to S swell window and offshore W to NW winds. On good days, rides stretch 150-300m along shifting sandbars that occasionally tube up into short pipeline sections when W and SE winds combine. This is a wave for all skill levels, though the heavier sets demand intermediate-to-advanced judgment. Weekdays see light crowds, but weekends draw the full Mar del Plata surf community and lineups get competitive. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn and winter, April through September, when Southern Ocean groundswells fire most consistently. Consistency: moderate to good. Bring a step-up for anything over 6ft, since the shore break can be punishing on the paddle-out on bigger swells.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are mellow with few surfers in the water. Weekends flip the script entirely. Mar del Plata has a large, experienced local surf community and Varese is one of the city breaks they claim. Arrive early, surf respectfully, and let the locals have priority on set waves.

Access & Facilities

Street access directly from the city. Roadside parking is available in front of the break. As an urban beach, there are restaurants, shops, and facilities within easy walking distance. Water quality can vary depending on urban runoff after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

If Varese is blown out or overwhelmed on weekends, other Mar del Plata beach breaks like Playa Grande or Punta Mogotes offer similar sand-bottom options with different swell exposures. Winkipop, further south along the coast, can provide cleaner conditions when northerly winds affect the city beaches.
